Plus...While government data is available, it is provided in an uninteresting way. Searching, browsing by category and file type are good, however, this information can be presented in a much more manageable and inviting manner.
While maintaining uniformity across government sites is helpful to citizens in recognizing authenticity, consider the advantages of having a more inviting design like the USA, UK and Australia have. They still have their official seal at the top but the UI is catered to the function, not the other way around.

On the pages that give details about position reclassifications (e.g. http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/pd-dp/dpr-drp/2011/q3/ocg-bcg/as-eng.asp), I would include a legend that explains what the different letter codes given for
"Reason for Classification Decision"mean. They all say either"Reason for Classification Decision: A"or"Reason for Classification Decision: H"but I don't have any idea what"A"or"H"stand for so it is useless.- J.H.
Plus...I think you could make it easier for Canadians to find data online by presenting in a way that is user-friendly and easy to navigate. Most of the webpages I've visited present the information in categories that suit the government department but aren't implicit to the user. And nothing is split out by audience.

A searchable online directory of government data together with an index that would give one a clue to key words for searching. Ideally this directory should be able to be located with a search for data Canada or Canada data.

Plus...There are a number of governments who have already blazed this trail so the first thing that I would suggest is to see what worked (and didn't) for them. Two other drivers come to mind; release as much data as you can..the more you release the greater the chance for people and groups to be interested and the greater the opportunity to integrate/mash data sets for interesting and beneficial results.
