Responses to our online consultation question 1 (Page 21)

This is what we have heard in response to our online consultation question 1: "What could be done to make it easier for you to find and use government data provided online?"

  2. À cette fin, adopter une définition gouvernementale claire de format ouvert. Par exemple, les États-Unis définissent un format ouvert comme "one that is platform independent, machine readable, and made available to the public without restrictions that would impede the re-use of that information".

En premier temps, il serait interessant de convertir toutes les données ouvertes de la ville en des formats ouverts. Par exemple, il faudrait éviter les .doc et les .xls .

Deuxièmement, l'utilisation des données gouvernementales ouvertes se ferait mieux si elles seraient disponibles directement en des formats faciles à analyser et naviguer, tels que le texte simple, CSV ou mieux: sous forme de services en ligne servant du XML ou JSON.

To create a modern, social-network enabled "2.0" set of tools that provide as much metadata as possible - both from the creators in different department and agencies, and also from users and customers - that diversifies the numbers of ways and methods by which the data can be accessed, found and indexed by search-engines.

For instance, privacy-protected (i.e. anonymized) download information would enable third parties to develop "other people who downloaded this dataset also downloaded that dataset" features.

First of all, improve the Open Government website. If this is an example of Web 2.0, it is pathetic, as there is no clear link as to where to start! Seems like there is just as much red tape online as there is everywhere in government. Have clear links to the data, and leave all the permissions, privacy and other stuff out! People don't want to press 15 clicks to get to the information they want.

Il faut d'abord laisser savoir au public que ces données sont disponibles. Pour ce, il faut un budget pour la sensibilisation, pour informer le public de ces données, et ou les trouver. En ce temps de coupures et de révision stratégique, ce sont souvent les activités de communication qui sont coupées.
