Responses to our online consultation question 1 (Page 14)

This is what we have heard in response to our online consultation question 1: "What could be done to make it easier for you to find and use government data provided online?"

We are committed to respecting the Official Languages Act and ensuring that its communications are in both French and English. Information that has been provided by third parties, such as the comments in the "What We've Heard" section of this website, is posted in the official language in which it was received.   1. The Health Canada website has become slow. Speed it up.

  2. For some consultations by HC on precise topics, the document is not being posted on line but rather we must request the document. This is more labour for a public servant. Why waste the labour, just post the document.

  3. It seems to take way too long to post new material on line on the HC website, especially the Natural Health Products site. Speed it up.

Centralized portal for information/data: I am familiar with the Stats Can website as well as website of particular interest to me (AANDC, Industry Canada), but am largely unaware of other department's data.

  1. Having a functional search option that filters for data sets only on gc.ca websites

  2. Meaningful descriptions, metadata and keyword tagging for all data sets

  3. The ability for users/developers to upload links to and information re: applications or sites that are using the data provided onto government site that provide the datasets - to close the loop.

  • I would appreciate that all policies and procedures (including application forms where necessary) are posted on line for review and where necessary to engage government stakeholders.

To make it easier to find and use government data provided online :

  1. The current Canada open data portal is a good idea but it is badly implemented and the data are unusable. Take a look at the UK open data portal at http://data.gov.uk/ . The UK open data is truly open, usable, interactive and invites participation from the public and developers.
